WADAA has a short section of the River Rothay behind Ambleside Rugby Club, please refer to the map for more details.
The Rothay starts life above Dunmail Raise before passing through Grasmere and Rydal Water en route to Windermere. The best of the fishing is in the lower section between Rydal Water and Ambleside although small trout are present throughout it’s length.
Good fly water is limited although the more adventurous will always find a way. The locals tend to use worm or spinner. Generally the river holds variable stocks of trout averaging 8oz – 12oz with bigger fish turning up fairly frequently especially after a spate when trout move in from the lake.
Fish can be very thin on the ground during periods of low water. Very occasional late season salmon and sea trout turn up – but don’t hold your breath. There are also rumours of chub and I can confirm roach are present if transient!
The river does hold a stock of silver fish, however, the true numbers of these fish are unknown providing the perfect challenge to a roving angler.
To find the river please follow the A591 to Ambleside, turn left onto Borrowmans Road. The Rugby Club is on your left. Please aprk here and follow the road round to the river. Follow the left hand bank downstream until the fence. This is where the fishing starts (Please refer to the map).

If you purchased your ticket online via Castbooker, please bring your confirmation email and some form of identification with you when you fish as you may need to show them to a Bailiff (this can be printed or on your phone).
