Causeway Lake

The Causeway Lake is an attractive, mature 35 acre gravel pit about a mile south of Twyford, close to the River Loddon, set in very quiet peaceful surroundings and is the club’s premier carp water.

As well as carp, the lake contains a good head of large bream, with some well in to double figures. A few tench are also present but not in any great numbers. The lake also contains pike and perch, with the perch in particular of a good stamp with 3lb fish not uncommon.

The Causeway came to fame in the late 1992 and early 2000s when it came to national attention for producing massive carp.

Terry Hearn devoted a chapter of his book, “Still Searching”, to his exploits on the Causeway.

The largest capture, simply known as The Causeway Fish, fell to renowned bait-maker Glyn Gomersall at 48.12lb and remains the club record to this day. Glyn’s catch has been rated in the top ten most iconic captures of all time by Nigel Sharp in Carpology magazine.

Recalling the day, Glyn said: “It was the May Bank Holiday when I went down to the lake on for a walk around. I was having a fag. I looked down and there was this monstrous fish right under my feet. I dashed home, grabbed some gear and a handful of bait.

“Half an hour later the fish was in my net. I couldn’t believe it. Unknown to me, a friend told the Angling Times and there was a big rush down there after that.

“A few days later I caught the second biggest fish in the lake, a 36lb common, which I’ve heard rumours is still there.”

Today the lake has carp mostly in the 15 to 25lb bracket with quite a few larger fish present. In the past The Causeway has clearly produced really big carp and has the potential to do so again. it could not be classed as a “runs” water but with a bit of effort the carp are there to be caught.

The lake has a large central island, a few dot islands, gravel bars, shallow bays, silty gullys, inlet/outlet pipe, weed beds, reeds, overhanging trees, snags and a whole host of features that you would expect of a mature gravel pit.
