Axwell Park and Derwent Valley Angling Association has access to approx. 4.5 miles of Brown Trout and Grayling fishing on the Lower River Derwent, which is itself a tributary of the River Tyne. The fishing stretches from Lintzford downstream through Rowlands Gill, Gibside Estate, Thornley Woods, Winlaton Mill and finishes at Swalwell road bridge.
The river has excellent stocks of wild Brown Trout which are supplemented throughout the season. The river also has an increasing stock of Grayling which is now well established throughout the length of the river. The river valley hosts a diverse range of wildlife including otters and kingfishers, as well as being the only site in the north of England where Red Kites have successfully been re-introduced.
Fishing is available either as a day or season ticket.
Axwell Park and Derwent Valley Angling Association seeks to improve and develop angling facilities in the Derwent Valley for its members and the community. It also seeks to cater for those who genuinely care for their locality, enjoy being involved in a river, and who appreciate a sport that affords them an opportunity to enjoy a beautiful valley whilst meeting those interesting challenges angling has to offer.

Brown Trout season starts on 22nd March and the finishes on 30th September inclusive.
Grayling season starts on 16th June and finishes on 15th March inclusive.
Fly only at all times from opposite Rowlands Gill caravan park shop downstream to Derwenthaugh Dam. See maps for details.
After 1st April until 30th September the only other methods allowed are fly, worm and natural minnow and only on selected areas. See maps for details
No Brown Trout to be killed before 1st April.
Bag limit of 2 Brown Trout per day and a maximum of 6 trout per week.
Brown Trout to be killed must be above 11 inches in length.
No Grayling to be killed.
Barbless hooks to be used at all times on fly only stretches.
Maximum hook size 10.
No more than 2 flies to be used at any one time.
No dogs whilst fishing.
Bailiffs instructions must be adhered to at all times.
All persons fishing must show their ticket upon request from the Bailiff or members.
